KIHEI, Maui (KHNL) - Beaches are closed on Maui after a woman was attacked by a shark while snorkling off of Keawakapu Beach in Kihei. Maui officials say the woman in her sixties sustained injuries to a foot and calf.She was taken by ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center. It happened around 8:30 Monday morning. Details on the type of shark and its size are unavailable.
Maui officials say there was an earlier report by a man surfing at Kamaole Beach Park who said that a friend's surfboard was bumped by what appeared to be a tiger shark. That incident happened around 7:30 AM Monday morning. No one was hurt in that incident.
A 4 mile stretch of beach from Kalama Park to the Grand Wailea Resort is closed. The areas are expected to remain closed Monday and possibly Tuesday.
