Jaws - Quintuple Overhead

Pe'ahi (pronounced "pay-aaah-hee") is a small area on the northcentral shore on the island of Maui in the U.S. state of Hawaii, which is best known for its big wave surfing area, Jaws. It is roughly three miles north of Paia on Hana highway. The wave sizes (which can exceed 60 feet during the winter months) attract big wave surfers such as Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama using the tow-in surfing method of big wave surf riding they co-invented (with Darrick Doerner and Buzzy Kerbox).

Photos taken by Jesse Inslee on 12/7/09 in what was described as a 30 year swell.

What I'm Eating

Baby Salad Greens With Sweet Potato Croutons and Stilton

1 large sweet potato (10 to 12 ounces), peeled and cut in 1/2-inch dice
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 6-ounce bag baby salad greens
1 tablespoon chopped fresh herbs, such as tarragon, parsley, chervil, chives
2 ounces Stilton or blue cheese, crumbled or cut into small pieces (about 1/2 cup)

For the dressing:
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 small garlic clove, minced
Salt and freshly ground pepper
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1/4 cup buttermilk

1. Steam the sweet potatoes for 5 minutes, until just tender. Remove from the heat and drain on paper towels.
2. In a medium, nonstick skillet, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the sweet potatoes and cook, shaking the pan and moving the pieces around often, until evenly browned on all sides, about 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and drain on paper towels.
3. Whisk together the lime juice, vinegar, Dijon mustard, garlic, salt pepper, olive oil and buttermilk.
4. Place the salad greens in a salad bowl and top with the cheese. Toss with the dressing. Sprinkle on the sweet potato croutons and serve.

Tiger Shark Attack in Southern Maui

KIHEI, Maui (KHNL) - Beaches are closed on Maui after a woman was attacked by a shark while snorkling off of Keawakapu Beach in Kihei. Maui officials say the woman in her sixties sustained injuries to a foot and calf.

She was taken by ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center. It happened around 8:30 Monday morning. Details on the type of shark and its size are unavailable.

Maui officials say there was an earlier report by a man surfing at Kamaole Beach Park who said that a friend's surfboard was bumped by what appeared to be a tiger shark. That incident happened around 7:30 AM Monday morning. No one was hurt in that incident.

A 4 mile stretch of beach from Kalama Park to the Grand Wailea Resort is closed. The areas are expected to remain closed Monday and possibly Tuesday.
